This fall I am launching a new line of what I think of as functional sculptures--ceramics pieces that will be carried by Open Editions at three locations in the Bay Area. It felt important to allow these pieces to have their own identity, so I’m producing them under the name jmi ceramix

jmi ceramix are all handmade and glazed at my studio in San Francisco. I use a mix of wheel-thrown and handbuilt techniques, and the pieces feature playful geometric handles and modernist color breaks. They aspire to high design but don’t deny their own materiality--I like to leave a smudge here or there, a trace of the process. They flirt along a spectrum of functional vessels and whimsical art objects, made for many different hands and intimate, surprising ways of being held.

In order to give them room to grow in their own direction I’ve started a separate website and instagram account which you can visit at the links below.

I’m amazed at how this work has grown in the few years since I started, as a meditative pastime during covid, and especially grateful for the enthusiasm shown by so many dear friends that has encouraged me to take it further.
